Sutures
The ULM presentation, titled Sutures.duo, offered a more intimate and performative experience. Installed in a raw industrial setting, the two-channel video projection unfolded across both a wall and a screen, with a dedicated seating area for viewers to immerse themselves in the fragmented visual dialogue. The first video depicts a woman shedding her "skin"—a metaphor for rejecting imposed societal norms. The second shows bodily movements beneath a transparent yet oppressive material, illustrating the tension between obedience and resistance. The third channel features a woman in digitally recreated Muhu folk costume performing capoeira movements—a reference to historical resistance and hidden struggle. The body becomes a site of political and cultural inscription, where transformation reveals both personal and collective narratives of belonging and loss in post-Soviet Estonia.
On one side, a close-up of a digitally aged female face marked by red scars—evocative of embroidery patterns—slowly emerges. On the other, a woman in folk costume strikes a capoeira-inspired pose, blending cultural heritage with the language of resistance. The asynchronous loops created a nonlinear rhythm, echoing how memory, identity, and political history refuse to align neatly. The work invites reflection on the complex negotiations of identity in the wake of Soviet collapse and the pressures of postcolonial nation-building.
